crown shy

Program notes

Crown Shy draws its name from a phenomenon where the uppermost branches of trees growing closely together, avoid touching, leaving gaps in the canopy in which light may pass. This unexplained behavior—serves as a metaphor for the ideas within this piece.

Throughout the piece, the percussionist explores spaces where sounds are both dense and fragmented. Where pulses and resonances fill time like branches reaching outward but stopping just short of overlap. Allowing sounds to "reach" for one another without converging. The result is a soundworld shaped by restraint and contact, capturing a sense of both isolation and coexistence, a reminder of the spaces we leave and the connections we may yet lose to our environments.

Commission and premiered by Alexandre Silva

This piece uses what I have been using and calling 'speaker-mics'. I haven't created instructions for how to make a speaker-mic but here is an decent existing youtube video on the subject.
